Head lice are small insects, about the size of a match head when fully grown, typically grey or brown. Their eggs, called nits, are dull sacs attached to the base of individual hairs and take 7–10 days to hatch. Empty white shiny sacs can be found further along the hair shaft as it grows. Lice mature in 7–14 days and begin reproduction.
