World Hearing Day 2025

Make ear and hearing care available for all!

World Hearing Day

Make ear and hearing care a reality for all!

March 3rd 2025 is World Hearing Day a global initiative to raise awareness about hearing loss prevention and promoting ear and hearing care. With millions of people affected by hearing issues worldwide, this day provides an opportunity for pharmacists to encourage customers to take action by getting their ear health checked and protecting their hearing.

Hearing loss can have a big impact on health and wellbeing and is largely preventable or treatable with cost-effective interventions. The RNID are the national charity supporting more than 18 million people in the UK who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

According to the RNID one in three adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus

They also state that over half of the population aged 55 or more have hearing loss and an estimated 1.2 million adults in the UK have hearing loss severe enough that they would not be able to hear most conversational speech. But it's not only the older demographic who is impacted by hearing loss. Around 1 to 2 babies in very 1,000 are born with permanent hearing loss.

Take action early!

There are many recommended actions to prevent hearing loss, such as listening to music and audio at a safe level (WHO 'Make Listening Safe') and reducing exposure to noise at work - currently around 75% of all occupational disease claims come from industrial hearing loss.

According to UK Health Security agency taking action early can in fact prevent hearing loss and suitable treatments can be recommended. This is a great opportunity for pharmacies to engage with your community. Offering support and advice, such as the online hearing test available by RNID could be a good start to offer patients an opportunity to check themselves before further investigation as part of your value-added services.

Patients need easy-access to care and as many people face challenges in securing doctor appointments, visiting a local independent pharmacy and consulting with a pharmacist offers a  convenient solution for addressing hearing-related concerns.

What may seem like an earache could be more and if a patient can get a quick and easy answer this could make a big impact for reducing the high numbers of people suffering hearing problems.
