Penny pinching on products is not the only answer
Pharmacies across the UK continue to feel the pinch; funding announcements aren't keeping up with inflation and the cost of running a business which includes the rising National Insurance contributions. Patients have a greater expectation of 'free' services when they visit their local pharmacy which also adds to the strain of a pharmacies resources.
Funding across the UK for 2025/26
The 2025/26 Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF) included an estimated 15% uplift in funding and an increase in Pharmacy First and contraception services in England. For Scotland the CPS (Community Pharmacy Scotland) has secured a guaranteed minimum reimbursement of £120 million for 2025/2026 up from £110million and at present it is still unclear how funding will impact Wales and Northern Ireland.
However all of these increases do not account for the continued rising of business critical costs and so it is essential for pharmacies to flex their entrepreneurial muscles to find efficiencies and boost revenue.
