How can your pharmacy support Self-Care in the community?

The growing importance of self-care and community pharmacy.

Why Community Pharmacy Has Never Been More Important

When we think about healthcare, we often think about GP appointments, hospital visits and treatments. But the truth is, most of our health is managed in the moments in between.

It's in the choices we make every day–what we eat, how active we are, whether we get enough sleep, and how quickly we seek advice when something doesn't feel right.

That's why Self-care matters.

As we recognise World Health Organisation Self-Care Month 2026, it's a good opportunity to reflect on how community pharmacies are helping people take greater control of their health and wellbeing.

The World Health Organisation defines self-care as the ability of individuals, families and communities to maintain health, prevent disease and manage illness, with or without the support of a healthcare professional.

Put simply, self-care is about giving people the knowledge, tools and confidence to look after their own health. And that's becoming increasingly important.

With 7.1 million people currently waiting for NHS treatment in England and numbers increasing across the UK, healthcare services are facing record demand, there has never been a greater need to help people access support quickly and conveniently.

The good news? Community pharmacies are perfectly positioned to help.

For many people, their local pharmacy is the most accessible healthcare service available. Whether it's a quick question about symptoms, a blood pressure check or advice on managing a long-term health condition, pharmacies provide expert support without the need for lengthy waits or appointments.

Every day, community pharmacy teams are helping people:

  • Monitor their health
  • Identify concerns earlier
  • Manage ongoing conditions
  • Make informed health decisions
  • Access trusted healthcare advice

Self-care interventions don't replace healthcare professionals; they work alongside them, helping people stay healthier for longer and reducing pressure on already stretched services.

Supporting everyday wellbeing

Self-care starts with awareness. From vitamins and supplements, at home SelfCheck testing kits, blood pressure monitoringgluecose monitoring solutions, weight management and everyday wellness products. Pharmacies can help patients build healthier habits and take a more active role in managing their wellbeing.

By providing accessible healthcare advice, preventative services and practical self-care solutions, community pharmacies are helping people make informed choices about their health every day.

Looking Ahead

Self-care isn't a passing trend. It's becoming an essential part of modern healthcare. As NHS pressures continue and people become more engaged in managing their own health, community pharmacies will play an increasingly important role in supporting prevention, early detection and everyday wellbeing.

The message behind Self-Care Month is simple: better health often starts with small actions.

By helping people understand their health, access trusted advice and make informed choices, community pharmacies are empowering local communities to take their health into their own hands. And that can only be a good thing.
