Earth Day 2025: Our Journey to an ESG Strategy.

Protecting people and planet with a new ESG strategy at EMT Healthcare

Protecting Planet and People

A new step forward for EMT Healthcare: Creating an ESG strategy

Earth Day is recognised globally every year on 22nd April. It is an opportunity to reflect on the environmental movement, achievements so far, and highlight the need to protect the planet.

The sentiment isn't lost here at EMT Healthcare as we begin our journey to understand our impact on the planet and our people. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policy has been identified as a core priority for EMT Healthcare's board and executive management for 2025, employing the experienced and knowledgeable team at ESG Experts to help us develop a comprehensive ESG strategy.

What is ESG?

Environmental, Social and Governance, ESG, is a framework for evaluating a company's sustainability, ethical impact and governance practices. According to the Institute of Directors business success is measured beyond traditional financial performance metrics. Driven by society's recognition of the value of company ethics, values and impact, businesses are seeking ways to effectively measure their impact on society and the environment.

The three pillars of ESG cover a range of areas that shows commitment to environment, human rights and equality as well as how they lead and manage. Some examples are shown here:

Why create an ESG strategy?

In today's economic and environmental climate ESG has proven to be good for business; benefitting employees and customers, lowering running costs and building reputation.

EMT Healthcare is rooted in family values, focused on creating a caring environment that respects employees, values collaborative partnerships and building long-term customer relationships. The Senior Leadership Team felt it made sense to formalise these values and take the next step to evolve the business, identifying opportunities for improving processes and learning new methods of delivering on the principles of ESG.

What will we focus on?

Our new strategy framework will include industry and size-appropriate metrics aligned with key reporting frameworks, including CSRD/ESRS.

This approach serves our dual objectives: advancing our company’s commitment to sustainability and fulfilling regulatory and stakeholder reporting requirements. We anticipate completing the strategy development in summer 2025, followed by implementing recommendations including the creation of new processes and policies (including Environment, Supplier Evaluation and Modern Slavery) and targeted programmes.

Key Focus Areas

Environmental Stewardship: We are currently evaluating our carbon footprint baseline. This assessment will inform a detailed emissions reduction plan encompassing energy consumption, waste management, and water usage optimisation.

Social Impact: Our social initiatives will focus on identifying and addressing salient issues within the communities in which we operate. We will use our resources - including employee time and expertise, financial resources, and our established position as a trusted local employer - to create meaningful partnerships with local charities with a track record of making a positive impact.

Reporting Timeline: While our initial reporting will be limited in scope, we expect to deliver improved, data-driven ESG disclosures by late 2025 or early 2026, as we implement our new strategy and start to capture data.

The route to sustainable practices  and social equality and equity will take time, but we are committed to our contribution to the pharmacy and business community, including our customers, employees and suppliers to be an organisation that has a positive impact on people and planet.
